How We Helped a Gaming Merchant Recover from TMF [Case Study]

The situation

A high-volume gaming operator came to us after their previous processor terminated the account and filed a TMF / MATCH listing under Code 04 (excessive chargebacks). Mainstream processors had auto-rejected every subsequent application. They were effectively locked out of card processing — with live customers and no way to take payment.

Why mainstream said no

Once a merchant is MATCH-listed, most processors decline automatically without review. Recovery requires acquirers who individually assess listed merchants — and an application that proves the underlying problem is fixed.

The approach

The recovery program, step by step

Step 1
MATCH file review. We confirmed the listing, the reason code and the realistic likelihood of approval before promising anything.
Step 2
Remediation. We documented the chargeback controls the merchant had since added — 3DS2, velocity rules, alert feeds and clearer descriptors — to show the Code 04 cause was resolved.
Step 3
Acquirer matching. We took the file to the acquirers in our network that review MATCH-listed gaming merchants, rather than auto-declining them.
Step 4
Structured approval. The account was approved with a rolling reserve and an initial volume cap — standard terms for a recovering merchant — fronted by orchestration for stability.
Step 5
Ongoing monitoring. Live ratio tracking and alerts to keep the account healthy and avoid re-termination.

The result

The merchant was back to processing on a dedicated account with a specialist acquirer. With the new chargeback controls in place, the ratio held below threshold, and as stability was proven the reserve and volume cap were progressively eased — the normal arc of a recovered account.

The takeaway

A TMF listing is not the end of card processing. With proof of remediation and the right acquirer relationships, MATCH-listed merchants can and do get back online.

Key takeaways

  • A Code 04 (excessive chargebacks) listing locked the merchant out of mainstream processing.
  • Recovery hinges on proving the root cause is fixed and reaching acquirers who review listed merchants.
  • Approval came with a reserve and volume cap — standard, and eased as stability was proven.
  • Ongoing ratio monitoring is what prevents a second termination.
