BIN (Bank Identification Number)

First 6-8 digits of card number identifying the issuing bank and card type. Used for routing and fraud detection.

Overview

What is BIN?

The Bank Identification Number (BIN), also called IIN (Issuer Identification Number), refers to the first 6-8 digits of a payment card number that identify the issuing bank, card network (Visa/Mastercard), card type (debit/credit/prepaid), and card level (standard/premium/corporate). For payment processors and high-risk merchants, BIN data enables intelligent transaction routing, fraud detection, and approval rate optimization by revealing critical information about each card before processing.

BIN-based routing improves approval rates by directing transactions to PSPs with optimal relationships with specific issuing banks. If BIN analysis reveals 45% of your declines come from cards issued by 5 specific banks, you can route those BINs to alternative PSPs with better approval rates for those issuers - potentially recovering 10-25% of those declined transactions. MIDs' platform includes BIN intelligence that automatically routes transactions based on historical approval rate data per BIN range.

Fraud detection uses BIN data to identify high-risk cards. Prepaid cards (identified by specific BIN ranges) have 3-5X higher fraud rates than standard credit cards - fraudsters prefer prepaid cards because they're easier to obtain anonymously. Geographic mismatches (US-based merchant receiving card from high-fraud country) flag for additional verification. BIN-level velocity monitoring (multiple transactions from same BIN range in short period) indicates card testing attacks.

BIN databases provide detailed card intelligence: issuing country, bank name, card brand, funding type (credit/debit/prepaid), card level (platinum/business/rewards), and historical fraud indicators. High-risk merchants use this data to implement risk-based processing: strict verification for high-risk BINs (prepaid, foreign, known fraud indicators), streamlined processing for low-risk BINs (domestic credit, established banks, low fraud history). This BIN-based risk stratification reduces fraud while minimizing false declines on legitimate cards.

In depth

Everything you need to know.

When a customer enters their card, the gateway extracts the first 6-8 digits and queries a BIN database, which returns the card network, issuing bank and country, card type (credit/debit/prepaid), card level, and risk indicators — all in under 50ms. Fraud screening then applies BIN-based rules: prepaid cards get enhanced verification, and foreign BINs require 3D Secure. Smart routing also uses the BIN to select the best PSP for that card — EU-issued BINs, for example, route to EU acquirers.

BIN intelligence enables surgical fraud prevention rather than blanket blocking. Blocking prepaid BINs — 3% of attempts but 40% of fraud on a typical high-risk book — eliminates 40% of fraud while declining only 3% of legitimate volume. BIN routing also improves approvals directly: routing Chase-issued BINs to a PSP with a strong Chase relationship can lift approval on those cards from 68% to 79%, recovering roughly $120K annually on $2M of volume.

Illustrative example — not a specific client engagement.

  • Nutra merchant blocked prepaid (4% of transactions, 52% fraud). Eliminated $18K annual fraud, declined only 4%.
  • Gaming operator sent EU Mastercards to EU acquirer (was 64%, improved to 81%). Recovered $220K annually on $8M.
  • Card testing: 250 attempts in 30 min from same BIN. Velocity rules (max 5 per BIN/hour) stopped after 5 attempts.
  • Use commercial BIN databases with monthly updates
  • Track approval rates by BIN at issuing bank level
  • BIN-based fraud: scrutiny for prepaid/foreign, accept domestic
  • Route by geography: EU BINs to EU acquirers (8-12% lift)
  • Monitor fraud by BIN type separately
  • Whitelist low-fraud countries (Canada, UK, Australia)
  • BIN velocity checking against card testing
  • Blocking all prepaid - loses 2-4% legitimate revenue
  • Not using BIN routing - missing issuer optimization
  • Outdated BIN databases - ranges change quarterly
  • Same fraud rules for all - treating prepaid same as corporate
  • Not tracking fraud by BIN - don't know which drive fraud
  • Blocking all international - loses 10-25% global revenue
